Malawi Orphanage Refurbished Dec 2015
31 Dec 2015
It gives us great pleasure to announce that our organisation has completed a major orphanage refurbishment project in Malawi.
While we provided the necessary funding to purchase furniture, equipment and fixings for the complex where 70 orphans reside in the city of Liwonde, our local partner in Malawi; Bedir Education and Medical Foundation Trust has provided logistical support for the execution of the project.
Our special thanks goes to Amity College, Prestons since their Year 12 Class of 2015 Graduates campaigned for the project throughout their academic year and collected the majority of the funds for the orphanage. To observe the outcome of the project and witness its impact on the orphans, a delegation of 13 from Amity College also visited Malawi recently as our volunteers.
Our project has significantly improved the living standards of the orphans residing at the complex. Previously, children used to sleep on the concrete floors without mattresses. In general, the building was in a run-down condition as can be seen in the following slideshow
As a result of the project; bunk beds, mattresses, bed sheets and pillows for 70 orphans were purchased for the orphanage. Allowing children to access their basic daily needs, toilets and bathrooms are also built in the premises with a hand pump and a water tank are installed for a water well along with the project. Other works and purchases include; fixing of floors and ceilings, fixing of walls and garden barriers, wardrobes, painting of the complex, establishment of an outside living area, electrical work and wiring, general carpentery for timberwork, mosquito nets, kitchen equipment and establishment of a volleyball field at the premises.
During the inauguration ceremony, our CEO Cihan Tumen has addressed all involved with the project by issuing the following statement: (read out in absence by Azmi Alkan, Year 12 Boys Pastoral Care Coordinator from Amity College)
“On behalf of the Australian Relief Organisation, I warmly greet you on this special occasion from Sydney, Australia. Due to my pressuring work commitments, I was unable to travel again to Malawi this year.
Dear supporters. It gives me great pleasure to inform you that your donations are spent within the framework of this orphanage project in Malawi. With your support, we were able to refurbish this complex and provide a significant upgrade to the orphanage.
I take this opportunity to thank our local partner Bedir Trust for coordinating the procurement of all the necessary construction materials and arranging all the repairs, so now the children of the house can have a dignified life.
Beloved children, we hold you close to our hearts. You are no different to us then our own children. Since we visited you last year, you were always in our thoughts. The condition of the building needed urgent repairs and we are delighted to finish this project today. We hope with this upgrade, you can concentrate better on your studies from now on. With the coordination of Bedir Trust and Medical Foundation, our organisation in Australia is ready to assist you in your future endeavours.
Dear volunteers from Amity College. Thank you for actively fundraising for this project throughout the year and also travelling to Malawi for this auspicious journey. We hope that seeing this project implemented succesfully first hand, will make you become ambassadors of the Australian Relief Organisation in the future.”
It was all smiles at the Orphanage when our volunteers socialised with the children and provided them various gifts, books and notebooks.
We would like to thank all our donors and volunteers who supported this auspicious project.
